(May 30, 1998) Stevie's solo return to the stage can be described in several words: awesome, incredible, hypnotic, triumphant, a pure treat for Stevie fans everywhere. If you have tickets to see Stevie, get ready for the ride of your life. If you don't yet have tickets, run to the nearest Ticketmaster and grab whatever seat you can! For those of you from the Hartford concert, tourbooks are now on sale, so you might want to contact someone to pick one up for you. They have some great pictures of Stevie, and a 1999 calendar inside to boot. Some really nice T- shirts etc were also on sale. Boz Scaggs started the show in fine form. I am not a fan of his, but I enjoyed his 45-minute performance. There was a 45 minute intermission between Boz and Stevie, and you could feel the tension mounting as this Stevie-hungry crowd awaited their first glimpse of this musical goddess. When Stevie appeared, the crowd leapt to it's feet, and remained standing for most of the concert. If you are short like me, stand on your chair and hold onto the person next to you. Worked for me! Stevie sang a lot of great songs which were not on her solo albums: Twisted, Sleeping Angel, I Need to Know, Gold and Braid. She sang 4 Fleetwood Mac hits as well. Stevie was in top form. I truly believe that she has become a skilled "peformer" rather than just a "singer"- (i.e., enthusiasm, enjoying being on stage, dancing and moving to the music). My only criticism is the absence of the wonderful and moving "Reconsider Me." I would have loved to hear that song in concert! Stevie looked incredibly confident and relaxed on stage. She looked truly happy to be there, and we were happy to have her back. In the middle of the concert, Stevie stated "I am 50 years old." I couldn't tell whether she was trying to convince us or herself. Stevie may be 50, but she still rocks better than all of the Fiona Apple's and Spice Girls out there! At the end of the concert Stevie came to the edge of the stage and shook hands with the fans (with 2 bodyguards at her sides). She didn't accept many of the gifts people offered, preferring to shake their hand and have real contact with the people who support her music. I believe this is an indication of her growth as a person and a performer (after her White Wing Dove concert, she grabbed every gift offered and held them all up at once, to demonstrate her "popularity" I suppose). I think the change is very becoming. Again, great concert by a great performer! review made by SR5242 |
