5 BEING THE BEST
by Curran Leahy aka "curranl"
First things first...the important stuff...I wore the "SLN Rocks/Tambo" shirt. It ended up being like a beacon...I'm standing in line and I hear "are you Curran?" coming from behind me! It was Anita, Tiffany, Curtis, and David. It was a pleasure to meet you all. You certainly made the evening even more fun and exciting. Curtis - our dance moves put other fans to shame!
On to the show. Red Rocks is an amazing venue. I agree with Anita in that it's hard to not be distracted by the environment around you. I found myself looking back, up towards the crowd and the scenery many times. But, I didn't tear my eyes off of Stevie for very long. I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but it was packed. I don't know if it was sold out, but it was very, very close to it. Even the GA seats looked full. And, the crowd was on it's feet from the first note.
Despite holding things off a bit, they still had to start the show while it was quite light out. It certainly made me wonder how she'd be feeling given her stage fright. Given that the venue was packed, wall to wall, and that she could see every single one of us, it was probably fairly initimating and, I'd assume, very emotional. When Enchanted started, she walked past her mic and out to the very front of the stage for a wave, a smile, and a bow. She actually almost missed her first line as a result. She had to do a little jog to get back to the mic in time. (For those of you who've seen Live in Boston, it was sort of like after Lindsey's solo on Landslide).
How'd she look? Stunning. Ravishing. Like she's 35.
How'd she sound? Wonderful. Personally, I didn't think she was pitchy. She did sound somewhat tired, but I thought she hit each note. She seemed a bit raspier than normal, even when speaking. Maybe it was the thin air messing with me, but I didn't hear any real missed notes.
I love enchanted as the opener. It very much gets the crowd into it and she seems totally psyched up by it!
Stevie welcomed the crowd at this point with a big "Red Rocks!!" She then mentioned that she was "fully aware that 20 years ago she'd stood in this exact spot." She also said that the video was something she was very proud of and that she was ready to do it again (apparently, the show was taped, as there were notices throughout the venue about the recording).
SDMHA...I know a lot of people like this song, but with Waddy, I'm not a big fan. Stevie sounded good, but Waddy should stick to the guitar, in my opinion.
OTR/Dreams...I know the transition between the two is completely standard, but I really liked it this time. Stevie totally belted out "Love is a word that some entertain...If you find it...You have won the game."
Rhiannon was amazing. This was certainly the first emotional point of the show, for me. The piano intro, the slow beginning and then the guitar riff kicking in...I love it. Is it just me, or does she look absolutely gorgeous in the Rhiannon outfit? I love the solid black on black with the wraparound top. The sound went out for about a line worth of lyrics. The audience helped out a bit.
Sorcerer was fantastic. Stevie had the air guitar out in full force. It was like watching her in the video, minus the guitar.
Stand back - the big dotted shawl was gone. She wore the small dotted dress instead. It was pretty funny - somehow, one of her bead sets got stuck to the end of her shawl. So, when she started spinning (and she spun a lot), the beads were whipping around behind her. Ah, the risks one takes to have a bedazzeld mic stand.
HAEWAFY - she told the story about how the song was written, not mentioning Joe Walsh by name (actually, I think she specifically stated that it didn't matter who it was about). She sang beautifully on this song.
GDW - Interesting venue note - I didn't realize that Red Rocks has no real "wings" or "back stage." So, for all of her previous costume changes, Stevie went to a little curtained room setup behind Taku. For GDW, she just tip toed off to the side of the stage, and prepped for the song right there. It was interesting to see them help her with the shawl, powder her face, give her a drink, etc. The end of GDW was something like "you can't save me now, you can't see me now, change me now...
Circle dance - This song is 1000 times better solo than with Don. I didn't feel the emotion as a duet. Solo, it has legs. Solo, it's serious.
Fall From Grace - She killed this song. I love it. Dear Stevie - Please - I'm begging you...do not ever stop singing this song live.
Landslide - She dedicated it to "all of you." The harmonies were lovely.
Band Intros - The only really interesting thing here is that she sort of contradicted herself a bit. As I mentioned, when she welcomed the crowd, she spoke about her time at Red Rocks as being one of her proudest moments. But, when introducing Carlos, she said "there was a time when I was not well...you, in Colorado, know that..." Interesting that she acknowledged that Red Rocks was not a healthy time for her after calling it one of the proudest moments.
Edge - Pretty darn cool to be standing at the stage at Red Rocks. Also, because the stage isn't elevated, when Stevie did the edge walk, she was eye-to-eye with the fans.
Rock and Roll - Dear Stevie - please see my comments about Fall From Grace. They apply here as well. Also, despite the fact that spandex went out in the 80s, I love the pants. You make 57 look like the new 30.
BATB - People need to learn to be quiet, completely silent during this song. There is no need to "woo hoo" during it. Despite this, the song was still gorgeous. The song...the lyrics...the voice...the singer herself...the venue...it was perfection. Unfortunately, it meant that the night had to end.
One final note - despite the fact that I had "TAMBO" emblazoned on my shirt, the tambo was inexplicably absent. Honestly, I do not think she gave it one shake. I do not think it made one appearance on stage. I'm hoping it has since returned.
I am so honored to have been able to see this show. Was everything about the performance perfect? No. But, I was at Red Rocks. It was warm, it was sunny, Denver and the mountains could be seen in the distance. I was with old friends, I met new friends. Stevie was singing. I was in the presence of a legend...a legend who seemed equally in awe of where she stood at that moment looking out at the red rocks and all of her loyal fans.

Amazing. How fortunate that I went to this beautiful place. Sentimental feelings for sure due to Stevie's "Live @ Red Rocks" but I'd probably go see David Hasselhoff there! It's almost a distracting venue to see a beloved artist. Between Stevie and the "Denver/Red Rock Full Moon," it was all perfectly picturesque.
As far as the show was concerned, I am sad to say it wasn't her best. It didn't horribly suck, it just seemed to miss a bit of the fire she fueled in Vegas, and in several East Coast shows. Perhaps the altitude, perhaps the girl is just tired. "Pitchy" sums it up best, but damn, I'd see her any ol' time under any circumstances!
Points of interest, obviously ya'll know that there was no special guest. Was the show taped???? A matter of opinion, but I don' think so. Lori was there, just milling about. If she's gonna be on the whole tour, and away from Jess (as is dad...wtf?) why doesn't she just perform?????????? Neil Heywood being sited ignited a Lindsey potential thread that obviously never came to be. I got one of Waddy's guitar pics, and I am sure Carlos' setlist. R&R + EO17 were the best of the night, while B&tB lacked emotion. When it came to Stevie w/ her fans, she genuinely loves us all! Bless her heart. See ya in LA.
