5 BEING THE BEST

The concert was great! It was like a Lindsey Buckingham solo concert. John, Mick and Stevie were like his accessories...like a coat or a hat or a blanket.

I know that I felt truly priveliged to be in attendance last night. You all are real legends and put on quite a show. Thank you. It was also pretty cool to know that Stevie went to Crockett elementary because I did too. I wonder what street she lived on. Also, my mother and brother went to Loretto - both were asked to leave ;).

Fleetwood Mac delivered a high energy perforemance at the Don Haskins' Center last night in El Paso. From our seats in the center of row four, we had a complete, close-up view of the entire stage. I have to say that all of the positive interaction onstage between Stevie and Lindsey was a highlight of the show. The band seemed to play harder and more urgently than when I saw them on "the Dance" tour. Overall, their performance was less polished (particularly on the volcal harmonies betwen Nicks and Buckingham) but more rocking and truly inspiring to behold. The superstar of this show is Lindsey Buckingham - he looked completely pumped throughout the night, and sounded that way too. By the fourth song, Never Going Back Again, he had already broken a sweat. He continued to rip it up and on Big Love just went nuts: lunging and swerving with a vengenance before collapsing with what seemed to be genuine exhaustion. Several times during the night he raised is fist after a ! song, or pulled his hand in as if to say, "we really nailed that, yeah"
Stevie appeared especially excited to be in the area. The crowd was delighted to hear her reveal that not only was El Paso where she and Lindsey played their first gig with the band, but that she had lived here from 3rd through 7th grade. Amusingly she went to the local Catholic girls' school - imagine a young Stevie in those uniforms! She sang right to the heart of everyone in the arena during Landslide, and especially Silver Spring. Her vocals were a bit rougher than when I saw her on the shangri-la tour and at a benefit in SF, CA in '01. But everything sounded so honest and emotional. Stevie told the crowd that she 'learned to sing in El Paso' and demonstrated her continuing love and passion for the craft on all her classic tunes.
This arena is relatively small (8000) but gets really loud with applause - and it certainly did last night as the audience fed off the energy the band generated. Most everyone stood for the entire show - as EP fans are hungry for music of this caliber, not seen nearly enough on the border these days. The band seemed to really enjoy themselves here in El Paso. The city, true to it's reputation, gave the band a warm welcome. We were rewarded with an evening that was every bit as inspired as any of us had expected.
