5 BEING THE BEST

Rated "3" by Mike The Psych

Let me start by saying that I have loved Fleetwood Mac for many years, and have seen both the band and individual solo performances many many times. Yes, when the lights went down, and the pulsing bass drum intro of "The Chain" began, I was psyched.

Stevie and Lindsey's silhouettes walking across the stage added to this incredible moment. However, as the vocals began, I was disappointed to say the least. I missed Christine's vocals, and found both singers flat. The mixers improved sound quality for Dreams, which Stevie handled well, as she is now best while singing in mid-range. Songs like "Beautiful Child" and "Stand Back" were absolute showstoppers...but come on...am I the only one who caught myself secretly praying that Stevie would be able to hit the next note during songs like "Rhiannon" and "Silver Springs"? I almost resent the fact that she goes on singing and straining every night...compromising her incredible instrument for financial gain. What?...if money wasn't the only reason they're in this this time around, ticket prices would surely be more affordable, and set lists would change. Repeating the same show every night is a tragedy given their vast catalog and past reputation for improvisation and spontaneous flair. This evening was unexciting, overpriced, and I resented paying this price for a mediocre show given by a band that I have supported for so long.

They were fantastic! What a classy band! They went all out for the audience! Their new stuff was also very good too! BRAVO!

Setting the Stage:

Sometime's it a Beach...Jones Beach that is.

Picture perfect weather...moonlit sky...it is the beach ya know. If you ever get an opportunity to see a show here, it's well worth it. Okay, there was no Landslide or Gypsy video screen behind Stevie this time around because of the nature of the venue...but who cares? As Sade would say, Look at the sky...it's the color of love! (okay wrong artist...lol)

Okay, who am I reviewing again? Oh yeah. that oldies act from the 70's who's last album was 16 years ago according to ticketmaster...what was the name again? (winkwink)....

Your LegMistress really scored this time. 10th row dead center and then a little winkwink flirtflirt with the security guy who looked like Grizzly Adams and I was at the foot of the stage. Met up with lots of friends...and made some new ones too.

I feel like a politician when I go to these things. "Hi I'm Jan from The Legacy...nice to meet you". And then I go on and on about the history of the band. LegTip: I've found that this is a good way to clear out the seats next to you...lol

I am just going to give you my overall thoughts on this amazing performance cos, as you all know by now, they never change the damn setlist. Plus I am going to Bridgeport and MSG so you'll hear more from me soon enough.

First of all, having seen two shows already I already knew it would be a great show (otherwise why would I keep buying tickets?)

I was my usual out of control self, purple shawl flying through the air, jumping up and down like a Macsican jumping bean, mocking entire sections for not standing up until they finally did during Tusk)...and basically making a complete a utter fool of myself in true hardcore fashion.

The Music:

Musically it was near-PERFECT...the best show I've seen so far. All four of them impressed with their spot-on deliveries and visible passion.

And yes I was orgasmic during 'Come' (did I say that?) But how could you not be? Everybody else was like..."Mildred, I think this must be the intermission"

Every song sounded terrific except for the downright awful 'Say Goodbye'. I admit that I never liked this song to begin with, but they had this one so amped up that it was like listening to 5 minutes of fingers on a chalkboard.

The Band:

John was in his usual spot hanging back in Mick's zipcode, this time wearing a beret. No, it wasn't a green beret although it might as well have been green cos he is definitely a hero in this band. His bass was right on time...just awesome. This man just stands there and plays brilliantly. How cool is that?

Mick was Mick. Always entertaining, a master drummer with a lot of class. Physically however, he looks like he's aged 20 years in the last three months. When he said 'The Mac is Back" at the end of the show he sounded like he could narrate twilight zone episodes when his Mac gig is up.

Stevie looked gorgeous and yes, vibrant. She was much more into this show than the ones I saw in May, She also sounded a helluva lot better . I don't know what tea she's drinking these days, but whatever ever it is girl...have a double on me. You sound great!

As far as some peoples comments about longing for a Stevie solo tour, I can understand that. And I don't think it's a diss on Lindsey or Mick or John either. They love her and just want more of her. As a fan of hers, I kinda want that too. But I also want my Fleetwood Mac to tour forever!

Lindsey was well ya know what can I say? I mean canned theatrics aside, there is just no one that can compete on stage with this man. He blew the house down at the beach more than Isabel could have ever hoped to.

And yeah, I screamed "Rolling Stone sucks" at the top of my lungs after "Come". Of course no one understand why I screamed that, except me and maybe Lindsey of course. Not sure if he heard my declarations of his playing prowess but I hope he did.

But all that aside for a moment...I do want to emphasize that, in all honesty, that it was Lindsey's MUSICIANSHIP that was the turn-on here. I was not at all jazzed about seeing the same exact theatrics done in THE EXACT SAME WAY. It was actually kind of eerie to watch him. You almost wondered if he realized how exacting he was in repeating every action, reaction, hand gesture, and sound byte.

I so admire his playing...that is without question. He is a master of the guitar...and is highly underrated. I guess I just wish he would mix up SOMETHING in his delivery... physical or even verbal.

All in all, an amazing show. It wasn't a total sell-out but a good time was had by all...especially by yours truly!

concert by the sea poem

As day grew dark
And Mars shone bright
The sea sweet air
Was oh so right

The drums did pound
While guitars wailed
And piercing voices
Spun the tales

We took time for a moment
And became that moment in time
To our passion for the music
We were standing in the li-ine!

Absolutely no denying
There was nothing that we lacked
We reached out for the stars
Fleetwood Mac was back!
